Counterbalancing Defined:

Counterbalancing, as Weber Knapp defines it, means that when your (lid) (load) is positioned at any degree of opening, it will remain stationary until it is manually moved to another position.

The counterbalance action is achieved by producing spring torque with a friction envelope to match the torque of the object to be counterbalanced. For more information review our case studies.

The Counterbalance Hinge Design Process

To design and produce a custom-hinged counterbalance for your application, the following information is needed:

  • Location of pivot point
  • Maximum opening angle
  • Center of gravity relative to the pivot in the horizontal (x) and vertical (y) directions
  • Weight and material of the unit to be counterbalanced
  • Dimensional layout including mounting areas and available space
  • Cycle life requirements
  • Type of counterbalance action desired any special environmental condition
